Serengetee started in 2012 after founders Jeff and Ryan met on Semester at Sea, a study abroad program that circumnavigates the globe by ship.
While traveling, they began exploring markets and collecting fabric from countries in Africa, Asia, and Central America.
We wanted to find a way to use these fabrics to make positive change in the world; we wanted to become the first brand centered around fabric.
So with zero fashion experience, we used the last pennies in our pockets and started cutting, sewing, and shipping pocket tees from our dorm room.
– Jeff & Ryan (Founders, Serengetees)
From day one, the mission was at the heart of everything Serengetee. By purchasing fabric from over 25 countries, they support artisans, their families, and ancient fabric-making traditions.
They used these fabrics to create black and white t-shirts with colorful pockets at first, and then expanded into tanks, sweat shirts, v necks, long sleeves, and more. After that they started making bracelts, earrings, purses, handbags, travel bags, and accessories as well.
And, on top of just supporting artisans and their families, they give back. By giving back 10% of their profits to a diverse range of grassroots causes, they work to improve lives in their communities. Each fabric (pocket square of the shirts) is from a different place, either domestic or worldwide and each fabric has a corresponding charity in place that the 10% profit goes to. For example here are two of my favorites:
The stories of these fabric makers and causes are baked into every product they make, so when you wear Serengetee you are truly wearing a piece of the world.
The best part is, all these products (beyond the fabric squares themselves, are hand sewn in Los Angeles, California by the Serengetee “Sew Pros”. For the relatively inexpensive products that are full of great quality and even better stories, Serengetee is a company to look at and watch out for just as Teen Wolf’s Tyler Posey (@tylergposey), Youtube Comedian Jimmy Tatro (@JimmyTatro), and The Buried Life guys from their self-titled show on MTV (@theburiedlife) have. Look out also for them and school (high school and college) campus reps sporting the Serengetee products.
